one way to deal with repeated floods is to build artificial levees or dykes. these walls of sand,stone and concrete are built along river banks which are prone to flooding, to increase the capacity of the river to hold water,thus reducing its chances of flooding. prominent levee systems exist along the mississippi river and sacramento rivers in the united states. the mississippi river levee system is one of the largest such systems found anywhere in the world. they compromise over 5,600km of levees extending some 1,600km of the mississippi river,stretching from cape giraradeau,missouri, to the mississippi delta. this has helped protect the nearby city of new orleans from constant flooding due to heavy rain. similarly in less developed parts of the regions in china,for example in china,dykes have been built for centuries near the lower course of the yellow river to protect the people living near the river. however, this is less successful in china due to the constant deposition of sediments on the river bed. the river bed becomes raise, making the river shallower. overtime, water levels rise higher and the dykes and overflow. thus higher dykes have to be built constantly.
with the help of modern technology, scientists are now able to monitor weather patterns and issue warnings when a flood is about to occur. such information prepares people for storms and probable floodings,hence allowing people to react appropriately. many flood-countries also educate its people on what to do in and event of a flood. evacuation plans are created and put in place. for example in the USA,when a flood is to be expected, the government will advise its citizens to evacuate their homes and seek shelter on higher grounds. they will also be advised on the safest route to the nearest food shelter. in addition,local authorities put up flood-warning signs in flood-prone areas as a precautionary measure against the onsets of floods. however, these are less successful in less develpoed countries for example in china. this is because even when warnings are given out, people may choose to ignore it for fear of looters. futhermore, due to the lack of transport system in place, these information may fail to reach those living in the remote regions. as a result, this results in many people dying each year in china,such as the flood in Yunan in 2006,which claimed the lives of more than 100 people.
